Each barrel of oil contains eleven years of human labor. Eighty dollars. A dinner. No union, no morals, no children. Everything was built on that slave labor: democracy, rights, the middle class, emancipation. The question no one asks is what happens when it becomes less productive. Not when it disappears. When it becomes less productive. What we call progress is not a conquest. It’s a bill. And the surplus to pay it is running out.
